A look back at 50 years of the G-QRP club SPRAT magazine.
The world-famous G-QRP Club was founded in 1974 by the Reverend George Dobbs, G3RJV (SK). Since then, SPRAT magazine has accompanied the Club through the last 50 years in 200 editions that reflect what low power (QRP) equipment members were designing and building.
For the 50-year celebrations of the G-QRP club, this 50 Years of G-QRP book has been created by the RSGB to reflect what G-QRP and SPRAT has achieved over the past five decades. The book has selected articles from across the 50 years and reproduced them as they were originally published. This has resulted in a bumper book of 320 pages which is broken into six logical chapters covering Transmitters, Receivers, Transceivers, Antenna Systems, Test Equipment and even nearly 70 pages of miscellaneous items. The articles have been chosen to show the changes in technology which came along over the years especially where the G-QRP Club were early adopters of new techniques and technologies. This provides a fascinating look at the progression of the hobby over this period.
Whilst there is a proliferation of portable operating 'Adventure Radio' schemes which attract QRP solutions, 50 Years of G-QRP can provide any radio amateur with the inspiration to build an old or up-to-date design. This sort of construction usually gives amateurs the same level of enjoyment from building and operating their own QRP radio stations, using just a few watts, as experienced by many others before them.
After 50 years, the G-QRP Club remains relevant in promoting low power and efficient operation and this 50 Years of G-QRP book provides a fascinating insight into those years and a celebration of them.
